Out with networking. In with conversations.

Does the thought of networking make you squirm? Read on for hacks to help!

In a recent LinkedIn post, I suggested it may help to reframe networking, as a ‘career conversation’. And, to help you feel more comfortable to have these career conversations, start by reconnecting with previous colleagues or leaders.

Make a list of past colleagues, folks you studied with, or perhaps met at an event. Even friends are a good place to start!

You may feel a little unsure about how to reach out in an email or phone call. What do you say? Will it be awkward? What will they think? Will I look desperate?

Don’t worry. Even for the most seasoned and strategic ‘networkers’, these fears are front of mind. Which is why crafting an authentic outreach message is key!

Find a quiet or relaxing place to draft the email or plan for the call.

I recommend going old school and use the phone! If you’re feeling less courageous, send a note (via LinkedIn, email or SMS). Refer to how you know them and provide an anecdote. Personalising the message helps to build the connection quickly.

Outline the reasons you are keen to meet with this person.

  • What are you hoping to learn or discuss?
  • What questions do you have about their career, current job, company or industry?
  • Or is it simply to give them some positive feedback about when you worked together?

It’s important to be clear on why you’d like to catch up (and it helps them prepare for the meeting too).

  • Provide two meeting time and date options, 3-4 weeks in advance. This gives them options and helps to avoid diary clashes
  • Be courageous. Folks are generous with their time, and open to sharing their own stories and experiences.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
