After reading the recently released Intergenerational Report, which attempts to map Australia’s future to 2063, there are a few things I wanted to put up for discussion about working and careers.
The report finds (amongst others):
- We’re living longer
- Slowing population growth
- Decline in working age population
- Slower pace of economic growth
I’m curious:
- What does this mean for designing a sustainable career over many decades?
- What will ‘retirement’ look like?
- What impact will this have on career pathways in sectors like health, housing and aged care?
- What organisational and workplace changes are needed to attract and retain mature workers to bolster their income?
- What skills do we all need to build now to prepare ourselves for working longer or in different sectors?
- What does this mean for younger people?
Perhaps choosing to become ‘full-time children‘ is the answer? In this article, folks are opting out of work and staying home to care for parents who pay them a salary. Is this the solution to a few of these future issues?
